Aug 23, 2024 - Japan suspends clearing nuclear debris from Fukushima plant
Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), which operates Japan`s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, has suspended preparations for the test removal of nuclear fuel debris. Radiation levels from the debris are so high that the company has had to develop specialised robots to operate inside, but an installation error has led to the delay. An earthquake and tsunami that hit Fukushima prefecture in 2011 led to a meltdown of the Daiichi power plant, the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Japan began releasing treated nuclear waste water from the plant into the Pacific Ocean on August 24, 2023, as part of a decades-long clean up effort.
