Jan 31, 2023 - Modernising hydropower plants: battery/turbine hybrid How can you modernise a run-of-river hydropower plant? Vogelgrun is a 142 MW run-of-river hydropower plant in France, situated near the border with Germany along the river Rhine. The plant has four low head Kaplan turbines, in service since 1959. As part of the European XFLEX HYDRO project, one of the units has been hybridised with a battery. Complementing the turbine`s operations, the battery system will add energy storage to share response capability with the hydraulic unit, and use a master control to optimise both flexibility and wear and tear effects. This enhanced capability will allow the power plant`s equipment to last for longer and improve the quality and reliability of power of the grid it is connected to. Along with the six other XFLEX HYDRO power plants, Vogelgrun is set to become a landmark in the energy landscape, showcasing how innovation can help our power systems accommodate an increasing amount of intermittent renewable energy, including wind and solar. |
