In this video, we take a trip back in time to the year 1965 on November 9th when the Great Blackout occurred. We explore how this event led to the formation of regulatory bodies and industry-wide standards that evolved into the "Critical Infrastructure Protection" or "CIP" standards we have today. We learn about the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), responsible for protecting the power grid and electric generation of all of North America. Their job is to prevent things such as random blackouts or attacks on the power grid while regulating the system. We discover how the regulations were initially voluntary until the largest blackout in US history, which led to NERC being granted the legal authority to install mandatory and standardized regulations. We learn how CIP has evolved to accommodate the explosion of technologies in the energy sector and the protection of critical information. The video also delves into the newest standards recently voted into enforceable regulations and how CIP must continue to match the furious pace of technology.
