Mar 28, 2026 - 9 Billion kWh! Shanghai`s Mega Power Plant Phase II Ready by Year-End In 2025, Shanghai`s total electricity consumption exceeded 200 billion kilowatt-hours for the first time, reaching 208.89 billion kWh, placing the city in a leading position among major global cities. This figure is 3.8 times that of New York and 2.8 times that of Tokyo. The Caojing Comprehensive Energy Center Phase II, located in Caojing Town, Jinshan District, is now taking shape. This phase includes two such generating units, with an annual power generation capacity of 9 billion kWh, equivalent to the yearly electricity consumption of 2.5 million households. The project is expected to be commissioned by the end of this year. This newly built project not only features high power generation capacity but also delivers cleaner and more efficient operation. The generating units in this project are equipped with deep peak-shaving capabilities. After commissioning, they can flexibly switch between 20% and full load operation depending on the supply situation from other power sources. This year, Shanghai has a total of seven major municipal-level projects under construction in the energy security sector, along with several preparatory projects planned. The aim is to build a safer, low-carbon, and more efficient modern energy system for Shangha |
