Mar 21, 2026 - "Artificial Sun" project paces up in China`s Yangtze River Delta

China`s artificial sun project is gaining steam with a new round of upgrading at the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak facility in east China`s Anhui Province.
Located in the larger Yangtze River Delta region, the facility`s upgrade relies heavily on collaborative supply chains across the region, which is a major manufacturing hub that includes Shanghai Municipality and Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.
One of the reactor`s key components is its superconducting magnet system, which can confine and control plasma during fusion reactions.
A researcher at the center explains that materials for the system are sourced from across the Delta.
The collaboration of resources has also attracted international interest.
A consortium led by China National Nuclear Corporation and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has secured a contract to work with the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, one of the world`s largest fusion experiments.
According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, nearly 40 countries are currently pursuing fusion energy programs.
