Jun 13, 2026 - China bets on battery storage as the next clean energy frontier China has become a global leader in clean energy, driven by massive investments in solar panels and wind turbines. Now, it is betting that the future of the energy transition lies in battery storage. Battery systems can store electricity generated by renewable sources and release it when needed, helping households, businesses and entire power grids cope with fluctuating energy demand. The industry has grown rapidly as battery costs have fallen, with China accounting for around 60 percent of global battery storage additions last year. Supporters say battery storage could lower electricity costs and help power energy-intensive technologies such as artificial intelligence and data centres. But some analysts warn the sector could face challenges similar to China`s solar industry, where intense competition and overcapacity have squeezed profits. For now, China is positioning itself not only as a leader in producing clean energy, but also in storing it. |
