Sep 1, 2026 - Britain`s Biggest Batteries Aren`t Doing What You Think

Britain is building an enormous amount of battery storage. But Britain`s biggest batteries aren`t doing what you might think.
Most people imagine giant batteries charging from wind and solar, waiting until the sun goes down or the wind stops blowing. And while they can do exactly that, modern Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS, are increasingly doing something far more interesting.
They`re responding to frequency changes in fractions of a second. They`re charging and discharging to help balance the electricity system. They`re helping manage constraints, providing reserve capacity and moving electricity through time when the grid can`t move it through space.
In this video, I look at what Britain`s rapidly growing fleet of grid-scale batteries actually does and why they are becoming such an important part of the electricity system
We`ll cover:
⚡ Why the grid needs to be balanced every second
🔋 The difference between power and energy: MW vs MWh
📉 How batteries respond to changes in grid frequency
⚖️ The Balancing Mechanism and why batteries are so well suited to it
💷 How batteries make money through multiple grid services
🏭 What a grid-scale battery power station actually consists of
🔄 How batteries can help support an increasingly inverter-dominated electricity grid
🗺️ Why the location of a battery can matter just as much as its size
🏠 And how the same principles scale all the way down to a battery in your own home
Britain`s future electricity system will need more generation, more transmission and more flexibility. Batteries won`t replace everything else.
But they can buy the grid something incredibly valuable: time.
