Oct 28, 2026 - How France saved Britain from a Blackout Did France really prevent a UK blackout? On 23 June 2026, Britain`s electricity grid frequency fell to just **49.657 Hz**, as the system struggled through one of its most challenging evenings in recent years. Then France stepped in, helping reverse the situation with a 2 GW swing in electricity flows across the English Channel. But was Britain really on the brink of a nationwide blackout? And were renewable energy sources to blame? In the first episode of **Fault Recorder**, my new series investigating real electricity grid incidents, we reconstruct exactly what happened and examine the engineering, operational and market decisions behind this extraordinary event. We`ll investigate: ⚡ Why 21.2 GW of British generating capacity was unavailable. 🔥 How hot weather reduced gas generation and affected French nuclear power stations. ☀️ Why solar actually performed well, despite claims that renewables caused the crisis. 🔋 How Britain`s batteries helped stabilise the grid, but began running out of stored energy. 🔌 Why spare generation in Scotland couldn`t reach southern England. 🇫🇷 How France and the Netherlands helped restore Britain`s operating margin. 💷 Why Britain was still exporting electricity while grid frequency was falling. The reality is more complicated than the headlines. Britain never lost its national electricity supply, and frequency remained above the statutory lower limit. But the grid exhausted an extraordinary amount of its normal operating margin. This is the story of what really happened, why it matters, and what it tells us about the future of Britain`s electricity system. |
